Production Manager - Steel Mill

Job Description

Summary: This position will support companywide objectives and values by coordinating the resources needed to meet quality, safety, and efficiency goals and to take ownership of continuous improvement projects and process standardization within their departments.

Job Duties Include (but not limited to):

  • Oversee daily production operations to ensure that volume, cost, waste, and quality standards are being achieved; and work to resolve any issues as they may occur.
  • Follow the production schedule and forecast to manage staffing resources, set shift production goals; motivate, encourage, and supervise production staff to achieve set goals.
  • Monitor production processes and adjust workflows for maximum efficiency, work with other members of management to resolve issues and implement process improvements.
  • Ensure employees receive adequate safety and job specific training needed to be able to safely and efficiently perform their duties, including new hire and ongoing training.
  • Monitor production area to ensure safety protocols are implemented and maintained; correct and/or address any unsafe conditions or safety violations in a timely manner.
  • Ensure conformance to quality standards, and actively participate in any corrective actions that may arise from nonconformances.
  • Manage Production-relevant KPIs and implement correct actions when necessary; analyze production data and report findings to the upper management.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs, upgrades, and maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Take part in cost control and budget planning activities; and identifying and implementing process and cost improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the sales and customer service department to adjust production levels due to changes in demand and/or available resources.
  • Regularly review performance, provide feedback, and organize support when needed to employees within your department.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations as well as sustainability programs.
  • Collaborate with human resources on staffing needs and personnel related concerns and/or complaints.
  • Ensure adequate documentation and record-keeping of production activities, personnel management, and safety procedures and incidents.

Participate in strategic planning sessions with top management, lead in the implementation of new technologies or production methods, and develop contingency plans to limit production disruption.

 

Job Requirements

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS (BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing field for a Steel manufacturer
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Sound understanding of production processes and manufacturing techniques
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Good analytical skills with data interpretation capabilities
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Basic principles of supply chain management
  • Knowledge of industry-specific regulations and safety standards
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Pressure-handling and multiple-priority managing capabilities
  • Ability to work effectively with MS Office suite and ERP systems
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply technical drawings and specifications
  • Flexibility and willingness to accept new technology and procedures.
