What you will do:
The Operation Manager ensures all requirements associated with the successful fabrication of product. This is facilitated through the logistics team, Production Supervisors, Team Leaders, and Production Associates on multiple shifts. The Operations Manager oversees daily operations and supports Senior Leadership, Supervisors, Team Leaders, and Hourly Associates by acting as a liaison in matters regarding policy application, employee relations, and continuous improvement for processes and productivity. This position carries direct and/or indirect supervisory responsibility.
- Plans, controls and manages the operations activities of the production floor to meet customer requirements.
- Develops and maintains customer and supplier partnerships
- Coordinates shift and production run changes (emanating from customer demand shifts, etc.) to ensure on-time delivery of good quality products.
- Assists in the development of procedures and methods which improve material and logistics controls/quality/productivity/cost to the materials/logistics operations
- Analyse customer releases and shipment schedules. Monitor and assist, as necessary, production scheduling activities to meet customer delivery schedules, optimize inventory turns and machine and manpower availability.
- Maintain, monitor and communicate machine capacity, customer volumes, manpower requirements, and equipment issues to meet production needs.
- React to exceptional conditions at the customer and supplier level and within the division. Recommend and ensure execution of plan to meet customer delivery schedules
- Ensure non-conforming material is identified and dispositioned accordingly.
- Review customer delivery performance ratings, initiate problem-solving activities for negative ratings, review permanent corrective actions and verify effectiveness.
- Participate in negotiations with production material suppliers to ensure optimum pricing and terms as necessary.
- Define supplier performance standards and measurement criteria. Review supplier ratings and react to unsatisfactory and/or unacceptable ratings.
- Oversee the scheduling, recording and reporting of physical inventories. Monitor inventory levels and assist with scheduling activities that optimize inventory turns. Ensure timely and accurate submission of financial and fiscal inventory reports.
- Monitor Customer Communications (DDL, SAP, SMART, etc.) and maintain EDI Systems.
- Ensure all ASN’s (Advanced Ship Notices) are completed by trained personnel per customer requirement.
- Ensure engineering and model year changes are properly co-ordinated to avoid surplus and/or obsolete inventory and to meet customer change dates.
- Review, make claims and recommend disposition of obsolete material.
- Participates in manpower requirements planning and overtime scheduling.
- Assists with capacity planning to meet future objectives.
- Integrates all operations engineering changes into production.
- Develops burst build and ramp-up plans for launching programs (concurrent with engineering).
- Coordinates/facilitates cross-functional teams to improve operational efficiency.
- Assists production employees in troubleshooting of machine, material and quality problems.
- Coordinates preventative maintenance with maintenance personnel and Logistics Planner.
- Oversees the Materials Department regarding all material-related issues.
- Works closely with the Quality Department regarding all quality-related issues, root-cause analysis and countermeasures, scrap reduction, customer product specifications, etc.
- Coordinates/facilitates cross-functional teams to improve operational efficiency.
- Initiates and drives CI activities to improve performance including environment, people, processes and equipment/machinery and which also includes the development of procedures and methods to improve safety, quality, timing, cost and motivation.
- Develops 5S plan and ensures its adherence.
- Develops TPM/Daily Care plan and ensures its adherence.
- Assists in deriving and facilitating layered process audits and champions establishment of permanent corrective actions for any related non-conformances.
- Develops department action plan and leads their team to achieve strategic goals and continuous improvement objectives in alignment with Magna Seating Columbus business plan.
- Participates in the development of company’s goals and objectives to support the annual business plan.
- Supports preparation of the budget planning process and takes responsibility to meet the financial targets.
- Makes decisions in the scope of their responsibilities that are in the best interest of the department and organization.
- Communicates and reports department progress/results on regular operations and on achieving the company goals.
- Directs and distributes the work for their area of responsibility.
- Ensures proper documentation of processes, equipment, systems, employee relation issues, investigations, etc.
- Conducts regular department meetings to communicate safety, quality, timing, cost and motivation information and to promote involvement in issues affecting employees or their work areas.
- Ensures confidentiality in all matters pertaining to both business and employee relations.
- Plans major hiring events; coordinates and performs interviews; and carries out performance appraisals, counseling and corrective actions for Supervisor’s and Team Leaders.
- Completes payroll activities for employees.
- Ensures employees are trained or certified, as required and participates in training programs as required.
- Observes, understands, teaches, coaches and mentors direct reports for enhancement of knowledge, skills and succession planning.
- Effectively builds and fosters high performing teams by ensuring teamwork within the department.
- Conducts and/or ensures that all Supervisors and Team Leaders investigate all non-conformances to Company policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and applies the appropriate corrective action.
- Ensures fairness to direct reports and encourages and participates in the Open-Door Resolution Process for employee relation issues.
- Works cooperatively with HR Health & Wellness to return employees (STD/Workers Compensation) to work under the Return-to-Work program and ensures the leaders within their area of responsibility monitor employees to ensure they work within their R-T-W plan.
- Ensures suppliers are performing work safely while in operations work areas/zones when applicable.
- Complies with, supports and models company’s operational procedures/policies.
- Complies with relevant Quality and Environmental programs (e.g. TS16949, ISO14001).
- Complies with all Health and Safety programs in accordance with OSHA.
- Follows and ensures all hourly associates follow all Company procedures and regulations regarding safety.
- Conducts themselves in a professional manner.
- Develops and maintains peer relationships.
- Keeps work area clean and organized.
