Purpose of the role:
The Purchasing (Commodity/ MRP Tooling) Buyer plays a critical role in supporting our manufacturing and distribution locations across North America by executing day-to-day purchasing activities and supporting sourcing decisions that ensure continuity of supply, competitive cost, and on-time delivery. This role manages material and supplier concerns, issues and maintains blanket and spot-buy purchase orders, supports RFQ and quotation activities with supplier cost inputs, and helps mitigate supply chain risks that could impact production or program launches.
Salary: $65,000-100,000 per year

Position Summary:
This position is ideal for a purchasing professional with a basic understanding of automotive component manufacturing, tooling/mold manufacturing, MRO purchasing, and core procurement fundamentals such as sourcing, negotiation, cost structure, and supply chain management. The purchasing coordinator also assist with supplier negotiations, prepares contracts and purchasing documentation, and fosters strong, professional supplier relationships while adhering to company policies, confidentiality requirements, and health & safety standards.
What you will do:
RFQ, Program Support & Sourcing Decisions
· Collaborate with the Program Team on RFQ and quotation activities, providing supplier detail costing and sourcing recommendations.
· Support program management and manufacturing operations with cost-reduction initiatives to achieve and maintain target costs.
· Support sourcing strategy and supplier selection decisions, including evaluations for capability, capacity, quality systems, lead time, and total landed cost.
· Oversee and manage supply chain risks and issues that could impact program launches; develop mitigation plans (alternate sourcing, expediting, capacity planning, etc.).
· Coordinate with internal teams and, where applicable, global purchasing to align sourcing approaches and supplier strategies.
Purchasing Execution (BOM/Requisition Driven)
· Purchase all job-related materials and components based on BOMs, requisitions, and technical requirements.
· Review and process all purchase orders to ensure accuracy (part numbers, specifications, pricing, quantities, lead times, shipping terms, and approvals).
· Issue and maintain POs, including blanket orders and spot buys; ensure timely updates to changes, cancellations, backorders, and receiving discrepancies.
· Track purchase orders end-to-end, expedite as needed, and communicate status, delays, and risks to stakeholders.
Outsourcing / Subcontract Management
· Outsource jobs and services as required (e.g., heat treat, plating, grinding, EDM, specialty machining, welding, inspection).
· Enforce the approval process for all unplanned outsourcing and document scope, justification, and authorizations prior to commitment.
· Coordinate timelines and technical requirements with suppliers and internal teams to ensure outsourced work meets schedule and quality expectations.
Vendor Management, Supplier Development & Contracting
· Build and maintain strong supplier relationships, ensuring vendors meet performance expectations for quality, timeliness, responsiveness, and cost.
· Research, qualify, and develop new suppliers to compare pricing, service, and capability; maintain supplier approval and onboarding requirements as applicable.
· Negotiate contracts and purchasing terms with suppliers to support supplier selection and supply chain solutions (pricing, lead times, warranties, payment terms, freight/Incoterms, etc.).
· Conduct supplier performance reviews, support corrective actions, and maintain a focused supplier base aligned with operational and program needs.
· Travel to supplier locations when required for sourcing reviews, audits, performance concerns, or launch readiness.
Inventory, Shop/MRO & Cross-Functional Coordination
· Purchase shop supplies, tooling consumables, and maintenance/MRO items to support production uptime and facility needs.
· Coordinate with department managers to monitor inventory levels, reorder points, and projected demand to prevent shortages and minimize excess.
· Work closely with Receiving/Quality to resolve issues related to nonconformance, damaged goods, incorrect shipments, and supplier credits/returns.
Process Excellence & Continuous Improvement
· Implement and maintain robust purchasing processes, including:
o Sourcing reviews and standardized sourcing decision documentation
o KPI assessments and supplier performance scorecards
o Supplier approval/onboarding procedures
o Standardized templates for RFQs, POs, blanket orders, and supplier communications
· Improve purchasing accuracy, efficiency, and consistency through process redesign and adoption of appropriate purchasing technologies (ERP/MRP, e-sourcing tools, dashboards, etc.).
· Maintain complete, organized records of orders, contracts, supplier communications, and sourcing decisions for auditability and traceability.
Other Duties: · Perform other duties, assignments, and projects as required.
What you will bring:
· High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or related field is an asset.
· 3+ years of purchasing/procurement experience in a manufacturing environment; mold manufacturing, tooling, machining, or metal fabrication preferred.
· Experience supporting RFQs, quotations, and sourcing decisions with detailed cost inputs.
· Strong negotiation and contract management skills with demonstrated cost-reduction outcomes.
· Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office (strong Excel skills preferred).
· Solid understanding of purchased manufacturing services (subcontract processing) and technical purchasing fundamentals.
